Tintbox privacy policy
Tintbox is a Chrome extension that places movable filters over bright parts of a web page, such as a shared screen in a video call. This policy explains what the extension stores, what it sends, and what it never touches.
The short version
- Your box settings stay in your browser.
- The extension does not read, record or transmit what's on your screen or in your calls.
- There are no analytics, ads or tracking.
- The only thing ever sent anywhere is feedback you choose to submit.
What is stored on your device
Tintbox uses Chrome's local extension storage to remember:
- Your boxes for each site: position, size, filter, intensity, opacity, shape and on/off state, keyed by the site's hostname.
- Your keyboard shortcuts.
- The sites where you turned on "Always on for this site".
- Whether you've dismissed the first-run tip.
This data never leaves your browser. Removing the extension deletes it.
What the extension looks at on a page
To place a box over a shared screen, Tintbox checks the size and position of video elements on the page (and, on Zoom's web client, canvas elements). It does not read their contents. Filters are applied by your browser's built-in rendering; no images, video frames, page text or screen contents are captured, stored or sent.
Feedback you send
If you use the Feedback form in the extension, the following is sent to the developer through Formspree, a form-delivery service:
- The feedback type (Idea, Bug or Other) and your message.
- Your email address, only if you enter one.
- The extension version and your browser's user-agent string, to help reproduce bugs.
Feedback is used only to reply to you and improve Tintbox. It is never sold or shared for advertising. Nothing is sent unless you press Send.
Permissions
- activeTab and scripting: run the extension on the current tab only after you click its icon or press a shortcut.
- storage: save your boxes and settings locally.
- Optional site access: requested one site at a time, only when you turn on "Always on for this site", so your boxes can return automatically there. You can turn it off at any time from the popup or Chrome's extension settings.
